TransCon2019

28 April - 3 May 2019, Ascona, Switzerland

Introduction
TransCon2019 will act as a catalyst in contaminant biotransformation research by gathering the leading scientists in the field to consolidate our understanding of the principles underlying contaminant biotransformation in natural and engineered environments.

The conference will be structured along four key topics:
  • Frontiers in analytical and bioinformatics techniques to characterize contaminant biotransformation and microbial community characteristics
  • Linking contaminant biotransformation to influencing factors and microbial community characteristics
  • Adopting new knowledge for the design of next-generation biological water treatment systems
  • Implications for prediction and regulatory assessment of biotransformation

Each topic will feature invited and contributing talks, selected from the submitted abstracts. In addition fourevening keynotes and two poster sessions.

Finally, there will be afternoon working groups, that will give room for (i) in-depth presentations of & discussions on essential tools, and (ii) in-depth discussions of unresolved or highly innovative aspects of contaminant biotransformation research. Working groups organizers will contact registered participants with specific requests for short, discussion-stimulating input presentations. Potential topics to deepen in afternoon working groups include:

The arts of bioinformatics – Workflow tutorials and critical discussion of potential misunderstandings and pitfalls
Chemical and enzymatic databases as essential resources – Introduction to different databases and discussion of data quality issues
Co-metabolism vs metabolism – An attempt to summarize existing evidence across environments, chemicals and research groups
Opportunities for read-across – Comparing drivers of contaminant biotransformation across different environments (e.g., activated sludge, soil, sediment) to evaluate opportunities for read-across
Next-generation treatment systems – Open discussion on opportunities for tailoring next-generation treatment systems adopting the improved understanding of contaminant biotransformation
