Short Course on Ion Mobility Spectrometry

27 July 2019 08:00 - 28 July 2019 14:30, Hannover, Germany

Introduction
The short course, offered in conjunction with the 28th International Conference on Ion Mobility Spectrometry, is the only professional IMS training available outside of university. The short course is suitable for individuals with varying levels of IMS experience, including those who are new to the IMS field. In addition to the practical perspectives on IMS history, operating principles and instrumentation, a unique aspect of the experience is the inclusion of the popular hands-on exercises with IMS equipment. Students will have the opportunity to perform actual IMS experiments, followed by a discussion of results and methods of interpretation. Finally, the short course will also include a Master Class session on a special topic. Our past Master Class topics include gating, ionization, modelling, breath analysis and travelling wave IMS.

Syllabus
  • History of Ion Mobility Spectrometry
  • Operating Principles of Ion Mobility Spectrometry
  • Applications of Ion Mobility Spectrometry
  • Practical exercises through hands-on demonstrations with commercial IMS systems
  • Master Class: TBD

Learning Objectives
  • Describe the principles and operation of linear gradient ion mobility, differential mobility spectrometry, aspirator and dynamic field instruments
  • Describe and specify the instrument attributes associated with hyphenated mobility systems
  • Through practical exercises, analyze and interpret ion mobility spectra; and evaluate the effect of changes in the operational parameters of an ion mobility spectrometry experiment
