The 4th Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) Forum on Global Challenges and Chemistry Solutions: Water Safety

20 August 2019, Heilongjiang, China

Introduction
The world is undergoing unprecedented change. With rising populations, and the realities of climate change, our fragile environment and resources relating to energy, food, and water are being stretched beyond their limits. Mitigation of these challenges will rely on adopting sustainable development, which means we need to advance fundamental scientific knowledge, support excellence in chemical science research and maximise the number of future breakthroughs.

The Royal Society of Chemistry is committed to identify priority areas and opportunities for the chemical sciences and contribute their full potential to tackling the major global challenges of today and in the future. We endeavour to foster new interdisciplinary research networks by working in partnership with professional bodies, academics and industries across the world, that can make discoveries and innovation happen. We are a catalyst for the chemistry that enriches our world by providing technological and sustainable solutions.

This forum of series, design to provide an opportunity for scientists to acquire an insight into chemistry solutions to global challenges and to be inspired by the innovative and thought-provoking ideas from top researchers, comprises a unique format of eight plenary lectures and one panel discussion session.

The fourth of the FRSC forum series, to be held on 20th August 2019, will be focusing on the important topic of “water safety”. Water is essential for life – not just for drinking but also for agriculture, sanitation and industrial usages. Chemistry can provide innovations in the fields of water analysis, treatment and resource recovery that can make valuable contributions towards improving sustainable water use and supply security around the world. Our eminent speakers will present their views on how research in chemistry related to water research and technology can contribute to solve societal issues and help to produce water of sufficient quantity and quality for humanity.

The topics will include the following:
  • Chemical and microbial contaminants
  • Drinking water safety
  • Water analysis and detection
  • Wastewater treatment and resource recovery
  • Innovative technologies for water sustainability
