Sir Henry Roscoe announced the isolation of vanadium on this day in 1869

Vanadium (V) is a useful transition metal. Adding small amounts of vanadium to steel considerably increases its strength. Vanadium oxide (V₂O₅) is used as a catalyst in the industrial manufacture of sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄).
