Chemistry in your cupboard: Harpic

Harpic

Description

When acid rainwater seeps through limestone, a reaction occurs and calcium hydrogencarbonate is formed and dissolved in the water. When this water is boiled, for instance in a tap, incoluble calcium carbonate is deposited in the form of limestone. This tutorial discusses the action of Harpic, a limescale remover, covering strong and weak acids, equilibria and the dangers of mixing chlorine and acid based cleaners.
