Skill development

Children will develop their working scientifically skills by:

  • Asking their own questions about scientific phenomena.
  • Using appropriate scientific language and ideas to explain, evaluate and communicate their methods and findings.
  • Selecting and planning the most appropriate ways to answer science questions, including:
    • Finding things out using a wide range of secondary sources of information.

Concepts supported

Children will learn:

  • How the use of non-renewable energy sources impacts the environment and animal habitats.
  • That there are different types of renewable energy sources.

Suggested activity use

This activity can be used as a starter or plenary, to promote discussion around a number of topics, particularly renewable or sustainable fuels. Children could discuss the impacts that fossil fuels have on the environment and research other alternatives.

The activity could link nicely with Literacy, with children producing a report on the pros and cons of other sources of renewable energy.

Practical considerations

It may be required to show children examples and images of renewable sources of energy. Also, some of the vocabulary in the recording, such as ‘polymers’, ‘molecules’ and ‘biomass’, may require further explanation.
