Drawing of a generic chiral carbon atom

For a carbon to be a stereogenic centre, it needs to have four different groups attached to it.

Notes:

  • This only applies to sp3 carbon atoms. sp2 and sp carbon atoms are flat (all attached groups lie in one plane), and therefore they cannot be chiral.
  • If any two groups attached to the sp3 carbon are the same, the carbon will not be chiral.
