This page will be used to upload data from the SUNY Potsdam recrystallization project, which are taken from a group of around 75 students in an introductory organic chemistry lab course. Other universities and schools are welcome to join this group, to contribute and compare results from different students - please leave a note on the discussion page, or simply add your data below. This page is released under a CC-BY-SA-NC-3.0 licence, and the data are declared to be open data.

The project

Students were given a sample of an organic solid (originally >98% pure) that had been ground up with 5 %(w/w) Urea and 0.4% Alizarin yellow dye. This is referred to as the "impure" sample. They recrystallised the sample from water, and recorded the % recovery and the melting point after purification. The organic solids were as follows:

At SUNY Potsdam, the students had only recently learnt how to take melting points.

  • It is suspected that this student used acetanilide by mistake. The results for entry 1 are therefore to be discounted.

Acetanilide

For the SUNY Potsdam group on Sep 13, 2011, the crude MP was performed by an instructor - students only ran the MP test on their purified samples.
