CCD imaging of mealworms firefly D-luciferin induced chemiluminescence showed that a luciferase-like enzyme is found in the Malpighi tubules. This luciferase-like enzyme, which is 30% identical to beetle luciferases, was cloned from a Malpighi tubules cDNA library. The results suggest that the potential for bioluminescence is very ancient in AMP-ligases and provide a first protoluciferase model.

Our results confirm the genotoxic potential of sunlight, reveal that UVA may also produce CPDs, 6-4PPs, and probably Dewar isomers, directly in naked DNA and demonstrate the applicability of the DNA-dosimeter system for monitoring the biological effects of solar-UV radiation.
