For Referees

  • How do I become a referee for the RSC?
Referees are normally invited to join our refereeing panel by invitation from the Editorial Office. If you are interested in being considered, please contact us by email.
  • I am unable to download the files for the manuscripts I have been asked to referee. What should I do?
If you experience problems either downloading files or opening the files in Adobe Acrobat, please contact the Journal Editorial Office by email. They will send you the paper by another method.

For Authors

  • I am an existing RSC Journal author but ReSourCe doesn't recognise me
Please contact the Journal Editorial Office by email. They will advise you of your correct ReSourCe ID and password. It is also possible that past manuscripts uploaded by e-submissions may not have been correctly linked with your ReSourCe profile. Please inform us if you wish to have any missing manuscripts added to your profile.
  • Problems uploading large files? Occasionally users uploading very large files (several MB) have experienced connectivity issues. We recommend that files are compressed (e.g. into ZIP archive) before uploading. If you are still unable to complete the connection, please contact the Editorial Office by email for further advice.
  • I received an error message during submission. What does this mean and have you received my paper?
    • Firstly, check whether your manuscript appears, marked as "Incomplete Submission" on your My ReSourCe home page. Follow the "Complete Submission" option, which should allow you to finish the task.
    • However, if you experience repeated problems and are unable to continue, please contact the editorial office by email, with the following information:
      • Quote the unique manuscript number assigned during submission.
      • Include details of any error messages received.
      • Attach the files you are trying to submit (preferably contained in a zipped/compressed folder).
The majority of submissions are completed swiftly, and unimpeded by error. Providing this information will allow us to help you more effectively on the rare occasions that submissions do fail.
  • Can I track manuscripts submitted before ReSourCe was launched (5th Oct 2004)?
If you wish to have earlier manuscripts added to your ReSourCe profile, contact us by email. Please quote your ReSourCe log in ID and manuscript numbers. These will be added manually within a few days.
  • Why can't I see any of my earlier manuscripts in the "Your Previous Manuscripts" page?
Only manuscripts submitted through ReSourCe appear automatically in your profile. For some regular authors and referees, previous manuscripts from 2000 and 2001 may appear, followed by a gap when our previous manuscript submission system did not fully integrate with the new system. If you wish to have earlier manuscripts added manually to your ReSourCe profile, contact us by email. Please quote your ReSourCe log in ID and the relevant manuscript numbers. These will be added within a few days.
  • What stage is my submitted manuscript?
Look at the current status of your manuscript on ReSourCe. For an explanation of the current status terms, please check the Glossary (available to logged-in ReSourCe users). The downloadable PDF flowcharts describe the publishing process in more detail.
  • Does RSC Journals accept submissions in Word 2007 format?
There has been recent publicity about other journals' problems accepting submissions in Microsoft Office 2007's new .docx XML format into their publishing workflows, mainly because the new Equation Tools introduced in Word 2007 are incompatible with certain editing and pagination systems.
The RSC will accept docx files for publication. If possible, authors should use Equation Editor (the main maths editor in pre-2007 Word, which is still available) to create their maths equations. We can receive files using the new Equation Tools, but our production staff will need to re-key equations in order the process your paper.
Along with other publishers, we are discussing with Microsoft how best to adopt the new Office 2007 formats.

A new feature of ReSourCe for 2006 is the option to login using a memorable user name as an alternative to your assigned numeric ReSourCe ID.

Selection of a user name is optional. The username must only use alphanumeric characters (aA-zZ and 0-9) and underscores (_). They must be more than 6 characters long.

Once assigned, the user name is fixed to your ReSourCe profile and may not be changed.

Your password may be changed at any time, to assist you in keeping your details secure.

This list of files is required by the article type of the journal you are submitting to. Please ensure that you include every item on this list in your file upload. If you do not include all of the required files it may delay the processing of your manuscript. Further journal-specific information can be found in this journal's Author's Information.

Word processing formats are preferred for manuscript documents. If you have provided us with a PDF, it is important that any fonts are embedded to avoid problems in reading your file.
