Parliamentary and Scientific Committees
The RSC seeks to promote its interests with the increasingly important work of Parliamentary Select Committees, whether they are Committees of the House of Commons or of the House of Lords - and especially the Select Committees on Science and Technology in both Houses.
Whenever a subject is being investigated which is of potential interest to the RSC, or to chemical science, an attempt is made to submit evidence so that the RSC's views, or background information, can be considered by that select committee and incorporated in its report.
Parliamentary and Scientific Committee
The Parliamentary and Scientific Committee is a primary focus for scientific and technological issues providing a long-term liaison between Parliamentarians and scientific bodies, science-based industry and the academic world.
The main aim is to focus on those issues where science and politics meet, informing Members of both Houses of Parliament by indicating the relevance of scientific and technological developments to matters of public interest and to the development of policy.
The RSC is a member of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee (PSC) and is regularly represented at its monthly meetings. The PSC has long been a useful forum for general discussion for it brings together a diverse collection of Parliamentarians and outside organisations with an interest in science.
SET for BRITAIN
The RSC works with both the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee and other learned institutions to host the annual SET for BRITAIN event. This is a series of poster competitions and exhibitions (covering Physical Sciences [Chemistry and Physics], Biological and Biomedical Sciences, and Engineering) held in the House of Commons, aimed at encouraging and recognising early-stage researchers and their work.
The 2012 SET for BRITAIN exhibition and reception will be held on 12 March 2012 at the House of Commons and will be hosted by Andrew Miller MP, Chairman of the SET for BRITAIN organising group of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee.
