The crystal structure of bubbles in the wet foam limit

After publication of the above article we became aware of the publications of the group of Alfonso M. Gañán-Calvo, Grupo de Mecánica de Fluidos, Escuela Superior de Ingenieros, Universidad de Sevilla, Spain.

Using a flow-focusing technique Gañán-Calvo et al. produced monodisperse gas bubbles (diameter 60 µm) and found that these self-assemble into perfectly ordered lattices in what the authors call mesocrystal foam (ref. A. M. Gañán-Calvo and J. M. Gordillo, Phys. Rev. Lett., 2001, 87, 274501). Of particular interest is the interplay of drainage and coarsening in these random ordered lattices (ref. A. M. Gañán-Calvo, J. M. Fernández and A. Marquez Oliver, Appl. Phys. Lett., 2004, 84, 4989).

Our general findings are consistent with those of Alfonso M. Gañán-Calvo’s group, with the addition of a clear identification of the type of packing encountered and some of the defects, the analysis of terrace structures which indicate that ordering is indeed a bulk property of wet monodisperse foams of bubble diameter less than 500 microns, and the interpretation of images by detailed ray tracing computations.
