Analyst, 2009, 134, 1965–1979 (DOI: 10.1039/b910206j).   Amendment published 26th November 2009.

The article contained errors. The correction details are as follows:

•  On p. 1969, the final sentence of the caption to Fig. 3 should be:

Polycrystalline diamond (PCD): (iii) grain structure; (iv) surface morphology with a surface roughness of several tens of microns.43

•  On p. 1970 in the Surface modification by chemical reactions section the second sentence should read:

Examples are the surface grafting of pyrenebutyric acid by esterification,58 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine,58 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES),59 quinone modification60 and the covalent bonding of 4-nitrophenyl groups on single-crystalline diamond via the electrochemical reduction of various diazonium salts.

•  On p. 1972, the final sentence of the caption to Fig. 4 should be:

The ‘R’ represents a long chain ω-unsaturated amine, such as 10-aminodec-1-ene that has been protected with a trifluoroacetamide functional group.88

•  On p. 1978, the correct details for ref. 88 should read:
