We present the time lapse sequence for the formation of (SI.1) wavy, (SI.2) ladder-like (SI.3) and isotropic crack (c) patterns. In (SI.1) a crack pattern is generated at H = 4.5 mm on plate 3, the video is shown at 350 times real speed. The primary wavy cracks form in the troughs, and secondary cracks grow and propagate perpendicular to primary cracks. The formation of ladder like cracks is shown in (SI.2) where H = 6.1 mm on plate 4, the video is shown at 150 times real speed. In (SI.3), an isotropic crack pattern is generated on plate 4, where H = 15 mm (video is accelerated by 600 times); the cracks show no obvious preference in propagation direction.
