In the process of transcribing from calculations to text for this paper, an error was made associated with the conversion factor of 2.3 between natural logarithms and base-ten logarithms. The numerical values recorded in Table 1 and in the text for the parameter Γ were misstated by a factor of 2.3. Specifically, Γ for the mW model is 0.57 (not 1.3 as given originally), and Γ for water of 0.52 (not 1.2 as given originally).

Furthermore the footnote on page 494 indicated by ** should read
** Eisenberg and Kauzmann14 gives Δh ≈ 3.0 × 105 kJ m-3. Gránásay et al.44 give a range of values for γ from which we take γ ≈ 25 mJ m-2.

Jeffrey and Austin1 report values of ice-water surface tension ranging from 10 to 42 mJ m-2. The corrected value of Γ for water coincides with γ = 25 mJ m-2. See eqn 17.

The figures and conclusions of the paper remain unaltered.
