Malonic Ester Syntheses

Syntheses based on the strongly activated methylene group of malonic esters. Upon deprotonation with sodium ethoxide, the resulting resonance-stabilized ion is alkylated or acylated. After ester hydrolysis, the free alkylmalonic acid decarboxylates to yield a mono- or disubstituted monocarboxylic acid:
