Professor Elizabeth Hounsell PhD CChem FRSC
1950 - 2020
It is with great sadness that we note the news of recent passing of Elizabeth F Hounsell, Professor of Biological Chemistry, Birkbeck, University of London.
We all remember her and recognize her important contribution to Carbohydrate Science as a scientist and as a leader, in particular her dedication to the European Carbohydrate Organisation and to the International Carbohydrate Organisation.
Liz was Chair of the RSC carbohydrate interest group from 1996-1997, Chair of the International Carbohydrate Symposium held in Glasgow in 2004, and president of the ICO from 2004-2006. She was also an editor of Carbohydrate Research for over 20 years (1994-2014).
A major aim of her lab's research was to understand the role of protein glycosylation in cell regulation and to learn how to manipulate protein and oligosaccharide structure in rational drug design.
Liz was a good friend, great company and a champion for the field. We would like to recognise her contributions to the field of Glycoscience, she will be sorely missed by her colleagues and friends across the research community.
