Lego labs with Radleys
175 minutes for chemistry
Back in the summer Radleys ran their annual Lego lab competition, which was a great way to encourage children to spend their #Time4Chem over their holiday.
Radleys received over 90 entries across all three categories (Ages 1-10, 11-16 and Over 16s) from the UK, Europe and America. Entrants were invited to design a Lego laboratory, big or small and be as life-like or as creative as they wanted to be. The competition was held over International Youth Day on 12th August which is all about ““bringing youth issues to the attention of the international community and celebrating the potential of youth as partners in today’s global society”. Radleys sees their competition as a great way to get children interested in science, as well as helping them to stay occupied over the summer!
The reason we ran the competition was to encourage more children to get interested in science, and to use their creativity and imagination to create a unique lab. We timed the competition to run over the school summer holidays, so that the kids had a project to get their teeth into. The competition was open to kids (and big kids!) of all ages, around the world, as we wanted it to be fully inclusive. We know that investing in the future experts in STEM (Science, Technology. Engineering, and Maths) is really important, and Radleys want to ensure we’re doing our bit to make science fun and engaging. Plus, we love playing with Lego ourselves
All the winners told Radleys how much they enjoyed taking part, as well as what they were looking forward to spending their voucher winnings on.
My father was the one to actually suggest building the Hadron Collider. After seeing a few pictures and reading a Wikipedia article about it from top to bottom, I knew I was going to be making it. Once I knew what it was, I was so enthralled by it and it was simply too marvellous not to have a crack at!
We thought this was such a creative way that over 90 children had spent 175 minutes for chemistry. If you or anyone you know have built a laboratory out of Lego or want to have a go we’d love to see it. Tweet us a picture @RoySocChem using #Time4Chem.
175 minutes for chemistry
As the oldest chemical society in the world, we celebrated our 175th anniversary in 2016. We wanted to mark this milestone by recognising the important contributions our community makes to the chemical sciences. We asked our members and supporters to dedicate 175 minutes to chemistry in 2016 and share their stories with us. We featured these stories throughout the year on our website, in print in RSC News, and on social media using #time4chem.
