175 minutes for chemistry
Dr Ida Marcia Philbin shares how she brought chemistry to her local church’s Christmas Tree Festival, decorating hers with inspirational chemists.
My local church holds a Christmas Tree Festival every year during the first weekend of Advent. This year I decided to dedicate my tree to the 175th anniversary of the Royal Society of Chemistry. I set up a Christmas tree adorned with fairy lights and pictures of famous scientists, including Rosalind Franklin, Marie and Pierre Curie and Ernest Rutherford. I also made a chart that numbered the pictures and had names under the grid. Visitors to the Christmas tree had to match the face to the name. I witnessed visitors having great fun doing this and it was my small way of using 175 minutes plus more to promote chemistry to a lay audience during a time of thanks giving and sharing.
175 minutes for chemistry
As the oldest chemical society in the world, we celebrated our 175th anniversary in 2016. We wanted to mark this milestone by recognising the important contributions our community makes to the chemical sciences. We asked our members and supporters to dedicate 175 minutes to chemistry in 2016 and share their stories with us. We featured these stories throughout the year on our website, in print in RSC News, and on social media using #time4chem.
