Green Chemistry provides a unique forum for the publication of innovative research on the development of alternative green and sustainable technologies.

Scope

Green Chemistry builds on the principles of green chemistry introduced by Anastas and Warner, while recognising the evolution of green chemistry as a cutting edge, interdisciplinary field.

Green Chemistry publishes research at the frontier of this evolving discipline, with a focus on approaches that reduce the environmental impact of chemical science. We prioritise work that establishes new directions in green chemistry, introduces enabling concepts or technologies, and provides clear evidence of improvement relative to the state of the art.

Publications in Green Chemistry encompass the design, manufacture, and application of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances, delivering demonstrable environmental and societal benefit.

In every area, work must meet two requirements: it must be excellent science, and it must demonstrate clear potential for improved environmental impact compared with the best existing approaches. Green Chemistry welcomes submissions from across the chemical sciences and engineering, from molecular synthesis and process design to catalytic materials, energy related chemistry, and applications in both academia and industry.

The journal does not normally consider work focused primarily on end of pipe treatment or remediation. In exceptional cases, the editors may consider work outside the defined scope where it has clear potential to shape the field or establish new directions in green chemistry.

To be considered for publication, manuscripts must present a clear and significant advance in green chemistry. Suitability is determined not by topic alone, but by whether the work demonstrates a well evidenced improvement compared with the current state of the art.

Authors should explain how and why the reported approach represents an advance in green or sustainable chemistry relative to the best existing approaches. Where quantitative assessment is feasible, authors should include comparative metrics. Where this is not possible, authors should provide a clear qualitative explanation describing the nature and significance of the advance.

For additional context on the journal’s evolving expectations, authors are encouraged to read this editorial: From aspiration to action: evolving the mission of Green Chemistry. Authors are also encouraged to consult the journal’s methods, models and metrics resources for guidance on assessing and reporting green chemistry performance.

All submissions to Green Chemistry must include a Green Foundation box. This short statement helps authors place their work in context and explain the basis of its green chemistry contribution by:

  • identifying the relevant green chemistry principles;
  • explaining the sustainability and societal relevance of the work; and
  • describing the nature of the green chemistry advance, including any limitations.

The Green Foundation box is used during editorial assessment and peer review to support clear, consistent decision making. It also encourages authors to reflect early on sustainability considerations, evidence, and trade offs in their work.

For further guidance, see the Green Foundation box and Guidelines in our editorial or watch our video on YouTube or BiliBili.

Green Chemistry expects sustainability claims to be supported by appropriate evidence. The journal encourages the use of established assessment approaches to evaluate environmental impact, including lifecycle assessment, techno economic analysis, benchmarking methodologies, and systems thinking.

Through our curated Methods, Models and Metrics collection and a series of best-in-class example collections, Green Chemistry provides practical reference points showing how high quality research assesses, compares, and reports advances in green chemistry. These collections bring together leading contributions that illustrate how green chemistry principles are applied in practice across areas such as catalysis, organic synthesis, and biomass conversion.

Taken together, these resources reflect current expectations in the field and are intended to support clear, evidence based comparison between approaches. They are provided to help authors, reviewers, and readers develop a shared understanding of what constitutes credible and well supported progress in green chemistry.
