Micropipette dropping liquid into test tubes

This 1-day course looks at the different types of GC columns; the different types of stationary phases and analyte interactions; the different dimensions and stationary phase thicknesses and how to choose them.

It looks at the analyte peak shapes and the factors affecting these, along with the calculations of the important chromatographic terms for column performance. Finally, the GC column oven is considered along with the influence of temperature on the separation.

The course identifies the different considerations when selecting a GC detector for a particular application and provides a brief introduction into many types of universal and selective detectors used in gas chromatography. The course covers in detail Flame ionisation (FID), electron capture (ECD) and thermal conductivity (TCD) detectors.

The course goes on to look at mass spectrometry, the reasons for using the technique and the data generated, reviewing the types of mass spectrometers available that are hyphenated to GC and looks at their components including vacuum systems, ionisation techniques, mass filters and detectors.

This course combines modules 4,5 and 6 of the Virtual Classroom Training: Practical Essentials of GC & GC-MS (total 19.25 hours) and the Virtual Classroom Training: Complete GC & GC-MS (total 32 hours).

Prerequisites

This course is for those who have a basic knowledge of gas chromatography and would like to greatly enhance it. Beginners should attend the Absolute Basics of GC & GC-MS course first.

Additional information

Includes: lunch and refreshments; hardcopy of the training manual in colour; glossary on GC & GC-MS terms; certificate of attendance; ability to discuss own problems.
