The crystals were nice and relatively large, but very unstable because of rapid solvent loss outside the mother liquor. The crystal structure contains four independent Eu-complexes and six independent solvent molecules per asymmetric unit of a huge triclinic unit cell, space group P-1. The structure bears some pseudosymmetry, by which the complexes of Eu1 and Eu3, and Eu2 and Eu4 are related. Thus, in a view down the a-axis, the structure provides a A-centered appearance. All four Eu complexes are chemically identical, similar in bond lengths and bond angles, but differ significantly in conformation. All four complexes have the widely found orientation disorder of 2-thienyl groups by which the sulfur atom is partly in cis- and partly in trans-position relative to the neighboring 1,3-dionato-oxygen. In view of the very large structure with over 50000 independent reflections and over 2600 refined parameters, this disorder was modelled as simple as possible, i.e. by a usual 2-thienyl moiety with three hydrogen atoms in which only the sulfur and the C2 position were permitted to have correlated mixed site occupation by S and C (sulfur position) and by C and S (carbon C2 position), respectively. This disorder affected all twelfe independent thienyl moieties in different extents. The CF3 groups were refined without any splitting although two of them (C(35A)F3, C(35D)F3) showed large anisotropy for their F atoms. The solvent molecules were essentially well-behaving and were therefore refined without restraints, except for the sixth molecule, for which the restraints DFIX 1.5 .01 c1x c2x c2x c3x c3x c4x c4x c5x<< and EADP c1x c2x c3x c4x c5x<< were applied. The Eu-complexes in this compound are chemically identical with that reported by Cardinaels et al. in Chem.Mater. (2008), 20, 1278 of a tris(methanol) solvate (CCDC refcode CIXGEW). However, stereo- chemically the complexes of the present compound differ from those of CIXGEW because of the orienations of the thenoyltrifluoracetate (TTF) groups relative to (2-Phenyl-1H-imidazo(4,5-f)(1,10)phenanthroline-N,N') ligand. In the present compound two TTF are with their CF3 groups on one side whereas the third has it on the other side. In CIXGEW the three TTF are with their CF3 groups all on the same side.
