The authors inadvertently omitted important text and a reference.

The first sentence in the third paragraph of the second column of page 2257 should have read 'The E. coli K12 HB101 was initially cultivated aerobically at 37 ºC.' 'HB101' was omitted in the original text. It should also have contained, at the end of this paragraph, the statement 'The design of the single-chamber fuel cell was similar to that developed by Liu and Logan.¹³ '.

In addition, the Scheme 1 caption should have read 'A block diagram of the fuel cell components [modified from Liu and Logan ¹³].'

The reference list should have contained the reference 13:

H. Liu and B. E. Logan, Environ. Sci. Technol., 2004, 38, 4040–4046.

The authors apologise for the omissions.
