The authors did not cite one of the literature precedents for the work described in their communication.
Saegusa et al. (T. Saegusa, Y. Ito and T. Shimizu, J. Org. Chem., 1970, 35, 3995) showed that Fe(CO)5 catalyzes the coupling of cyclohexyl azide with tert-butyl, cyclohexyl, and phenyl isocyanides to give the corresponding carbodiimides. Reaction at 90 °C for 24 h gave 48–60% yield of carbodiimide with ca. 10 turnovers, showing that Fe(CO)5 is less efficient than the diketiminate–iron catalyst reported by Cowley et al.
