Fig. 9 (a) Main reaction mechanism for the reaction of NO3 radicals with benzo[a]pyrene in the presence of NO2. Nitro-BaP, the main reaction product, and HNO3, a by-product, are generated.54 (b) After formation of the BaP-NO3 adduct, the NO3 may decompose, leaving a radical oxygen attached to the molecule and producing gas-phase NO2. The radical oxygen abstracts a hydrogen from the BaP, forming the OH group.
