The weighted R-factor wR and goodness of fit S are based on F^2^, conventional R-factors R are based on F, with F set to zero for negative F^2^. The threshold expression of F^2^ > 2sigma(F^2^) is used only for calculating R-factors(gt) etc. and is not relevant to the choice of reflections for refinement. R-factors based on F^2^ are statistically about twice as large as those based on F, and R- factors based on ALL data will be even larger. Refinements died with R1 about 0.18, and with a clear image of a second molecule apparent for much of the structure, including several of the PF~6~^-^ anions. Incorporation of a second orientation, along with extensive restraints on positional and anisotropic displacement parameters, lowered R1 to 0.13, with site occupancy ratio of 0.595:0.405. Some unrequited disorder was still apparent as much residual electron density (+/- 1.8 electron/%A^3^) was concentrated in the vicinity of several zinc centres that had not been allowed to occupy two sites. The geometry of each ligand and each zinc centre was chemically reasonable, indicating no errors in restraints used. However, considerable care had to be taken to sort the disordered components into two coherent complexes such that the resulting intramolecular hydrogen bonding was chemically sensible for each conformation. Only one of the ligands has a single conformation, two have limited regions of single comformation, and the remaining two have two distinct comformations. Three of the eight zinc ions are accorded two sites and of the remaining five, residual electron density and atomic displacement parameters indicate some disorder. The central Li cation and two phosphate anions are very well ordered. At this stage (and indeed at earlier stages) the list of reflections that had poor agreement between Fobs and Fcalc showed large numbers of weak to medium reflections for which Fcalc << Fobs. Inspection of the complete file of Fobs and Fcalc revealed that most reflections in fact showed extremely good agreement bertween Fobs and Fcalc, an agreement commensurate with the very good intrinsic quality of the data (R~int~ = 0.041 and R~sigma~ = 0.055). Not surprisingly since there were no significant violations of the systematic absences for space group P2~1~/c, solution and refinement in lower symmetry space groups were unsuccessful. The high residual values for R1 and also for wR2 could not be attributed entirely to disordered solvate species as the crystal structure contains no very large voids which might be inhabited by disordered solvate species. However, 659 electrons in two void volumes totalling 1448 \%A^3^ ( about 10% of total cell volume) were removed using SQUEEZE from the PLATOM suite (Spek AL. 1990. Acta Cryst A46 C34). Prior to "SQUEEZing", a wide variety of potential twin laws for pseudo-merohedral twinning were tested, including ones for partially overlapped reciprocal lattices, as intensity statistics showed some apparent acentricity. However, the problems do not appear to involve a (near) commensurately twinned structure. Barring data-processing malfunctions, we were forced to conclude that the crystal contained a number of randomly oriented domains that added intensity most noticeably, of course, to weak-to-medium intensity reflections. Approximately 2.5% of reflections were rejected, at which stage the first reflections for which Fcalc > Fobs appeared in the list of reflections showing poor agreement between Fcalc and Fobs (with respect to esd). R1 dropped to 0.0994 and wR2 to 0.249. The weighting scheme (see table) remains abnormal. Regardless of problems with the crystal, the data and/or refinement, the molecular connectivity is clear. At all stages in refinement, atomic displacement parameters were remarkably well-behaved; once disorder was added, similiarity restraints on anisotropic displacement parameters were applied to those atoms closer than 1.0 %A in order to mitigate parameter correlation artefacts. The molecule has pseudo-two-fold symmetry. Differences in bond distances and angles among two-fold related pairs of parameters are statistically insignificant. All evidence points to reflections being randomly affected by whatever problem is causing refinements to die at values higher than expected from the intrinsic quality of the data. An alternative explanation for the disorder and rather high residuals is that the crystal had variable amounts of solvent distributed through it, leaving to slightly different positioning of the complex depending on whether it was in a solvent-rich or solvent-poor environment. No evidence for a supercell was observed. Thus, we are confident that this structure contains no systematic errors. Refinement of F^2^ against ALL reflections. Raw images were examined for thermally diffuse scattering and the presence of "little friends". A number of reflections showed signs of small friends (<1%), but in addition to broad splodges between Bragg reflections many reflections sat on a very broad low intensity peak, indicative of thermally diffuse scattering. The effects of this are more significant for weaker reflections, leading to the observed behaviour on refinement that for weaker reflections |Fobs| > |Fcalc|. A number of ALERT level A and B warnings are issued. Those involving stereochemical problems (unnaturally close intermolecular contacts) can be resolved when the disorder is taken into account. Similarly, several neighbouring atoms have larger than expected differences in atomic displacement parameters.
