In the introduction section, second paragraph, in the sentence beginning "The function of cellulose..." the phrase "glucose monomers connected by β(1–4) hydrogen bond linkages”, should be “glucose monomers connected by β(1–4) glycosidic bond linkages".

The Royal Society of Chemistry apologises for these errors and any consequent inconvenience to authors and readers.
