The following biographical information should have appeared at the start of the article:

Sneha Sudha Komath was born in Badagara, Kerala (India) in 1968. She completed her Masters with a gold medal in Chemistry in 1991 from the University of Hyderabad (India). After two years at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (India), learning solvation dynamics, she rejoined the School of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad from where she obtained her PhD degree (1999) working in the field of lectin chemistry under the supervision of Dr Musti J. Swamy. She went on to do post-doctoral research at the Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh (India) and the University of Wisconsin, Madison (USA). She began her teaching career in 1999 at the Department of Chemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh (India) and moved in 2003 to the School of Life Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (India), where she is currently an Assistant Professor. Her research interests include lectin chemistry, GPI anchor biosynthesis and protein folding.

Kavitha Mannem was born in 1976 in Nereducherla, Andhra Pradesh (India). She graduated in 1997 from the Osmania University, Hyderabad, India. She joined the Master's programme at the School of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad, in 2000 and obtained her MSc degree in 2002. Presently she is working for her PhD degree in the same university under the supervision of Prof. Musti J. Swamy on the Cucurbitaceae seed lectins and their interaction with hydrophobic ligands and carbohydrates.

Musti J. Swamy obtained his BSc (Chemistry major) in 1979 from the Dharma Appa Rao College, Nuzvid, Andhra Pradesh, India (affiliated to the Andhra University, Waltair) and MSc (Chemistry) from the University of Hyderabad (Hyderabad, India) in 1981. He then worked on legume lectins under the supervision of Professor A. Surolia at the Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore, India) and obtained his PhD in 1987. He then did a postdoctoral stint with Professor Charles C. Sweeley (Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, USA, 1987–89), during which he investigated the metabolism of GM3 ganglioside in cultured fibroblasts. In a second postdoctoral stint he was associated with Professor Derek Marsh (Max-Planck Institut für biophysikalische Chemie, Göttingen, Germany, 1990–93) and studied the lipid phase behaviour and polymorphism and lipid–protein interaction by ESR and NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and small-angle X-ray scattering. He joined the University of Hyderabad in 1993 as a Lecturer, promoted as Reader in 1998 and as Professor in 2004. His research interests are in the areas of protein chemistry, protein–ligand interactions (especially the interaction of lectins with carbohydrate and hydrophobic ligands), lipid phase behaviour and lipid–protein interactions. He has authored/coauthored over 70 research papers, including several reviews.
