Protein & Peptide Science Group
The Group is a group of the Chemical Biology Forum of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Originally founded in 1973 as the Chemical Society Protein Subject Group, it became the Royal Society of Chemistry Protein Subject Group in 1980. The Group has also a strong historic basis in Peptide chemistry. As the Protein and Peptide Science Group, it was, until recently, a joint group of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Biochemical Society.
The interests of the Group have developed in recent years to cover: Protein structure determination, structure prediction, molecular modeling and dynamics, Protein separation and characterization, Protein biosynthesis, Protein expression, modification and targeting, combinatorial synthesis, Protein design and engineering, drug-Protein and Protein-Protein interactions and Protein structure-function. The Group is committed to paving the way forward into functional genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics.
Mission Statement
The Group's mission is to maintain the logical progression of molecular science through chemistry into biochemistry, biology, medicine, plant and food science. Thus, it has an interdisciplinary approach, representing the Protein science interests of chemists, molecular biologists, structural biologists, Peptide chemists and biologists, medics, members of the biotechnology, food and pharmaceutical industries. These interests are represented in the make-up of the present Committee.
The Group has formal links with the European Peptide Society, the Australian Peptide Society and the Theme Panels of the Biochemical Society. Some members of the Group's Committee are active also in the Biochemical Society "Informal IT-supported Protein & Peptide Group". The Group is actively engaged in the organization of meetings to promote Peptide and Protein Science, and in representing our members' interests in the wider scientific community, in government, at Research Councils, and at grant giving bodies such as the Wellcome Trust. The Group attempts to influence positively the way in which science is taught in schools, colleges and universities. The Group's members may attend meetings sponsored by the RSC and meetings jointly sponsored by the RSC and the Biochemical Society at reduced rates, receive Chemistry World and make use of the Library Facilities at Burlington House.
