Chiral oxazaborolidine catalysts derived from cis-1-amino-indan-2-ol have been shown to be highly effective catalysts for the kinetic resolution of racemic pyrrolidine-2,5-diones with selectivity factors of up to 23 obtained with 0.5 mol% catalyst. The selectivity of the catalyst was very sensitive to the nature of the nitrogen protecting group.
