IYPT 2019 Public Lecture: Cambridge

2 August 2019 14:00-15:00, Cambridge, United Kingdom

Introduction

In celebration of the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT2019), the Royal Society of Chemsitry is organising a series of talks at science cnetres, universities and other venues across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Aimed at the public nd established chemists alike, the IYPT Lectures will feature some of the most exciting science communicators in the field of chemistry, whose talks will bring the periodic table of elements to life.

Join 2012 Christmas Lecturer Peter Wothers for an exciting and explosive journey through the elements. This demonstration filled lecture will show you the genius of Mendeleev’s discovery from Argon to Zinc.

Dr Wothers celebrates the International Year of the Periodic Table in a demonstration lecture that explores how the iconic arrangement came about, what it means and how it works.  From its earliest beginnings, he explains why several different arrangements all appeared around the same time 150 years ago, and investigates how atomic structure gives rise to the diverse range of chemical properties from metals which explode in water, to elements which enable things to burn. Incorporating some exciting new demonstrations, and with help from the audience we'll find out why our saucepans should be made out of diamond, and where to find bags of separate atoms.
