Sustainable Chemical Approaches for CO₂ Reduction: UK-Brazil Newton Fund Researcher Links Workshop

Large anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide released since the beginning of the industrial revolution are the main cause of global warming. The carbon dioxide molecule traps the heat in the form of the infrared energy emitted by Earth to space, warming the surface through the greenhouse effect. While low concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are important to keep the Earth’s surface temperature within the habitable range, large concentrations can lead to climatic change. The rapid increase of the carbon dioxide concentration during the last few years alongside deforestation has led to a carbon dioxide unbalance. However, tackling this global challenge offers an exciting opportunity for using chemical approaches to capture carbon dioxide in-situ and convert it into chemicals of high commercial value using heterogeneous catalysts, homogeneous catalysts and photocatalyst, which are the topics to be addressed in the workshop. This is a very timely topic given the negative impact that climate change driven by raising emissions of carbon dioxide is starting to have in all sectors of the Brazil economy. The workshop is conceived as a career development opportunity with a focus on promoting international collaboration within the bilateral cohort of early career researchers and their Mentors and Principal Applicants.

The immediate benefits of the workshop include:

  •  supporting the closely linked international development research areas climate, environment and sustainable energy in the UK and Brazil;

  • contributing to the capacity building of early career researchers in both countries;

  • establishing new research connections and significantly developing existing collaborations within the bilateral cohort of early career researchers.

The workshop will bring together chemists and chemical engineers working in the fields of carbon dioxide capture, conversion and utilisation working in delivering the use of these technologies and their environmental and societal impacts. Each of these groups will include participants from both Brazil and the UK to build robust networks and share ideas.

We are now inviting Early Career Researchers (ECR) from the UK and São Paulo - Brazil to apply to attend this workshop. The coordinators will select 20 participants each from the UK and Brazil.

To be eligible for consideration, Early Career Researchers must have obtained a PhD within 10 years prior to the workshop. Participants must also have links to UK or Brazil higher education, research institutions or relevant industrial R&D organisations.

The workshop will be held in English. The costs of travel, accommodation and meals during the workshop for the UK participants will be covered by the Newton Researcher Links programme.
