400 years of Slide Rules

16 March 2023 17:00-18:00, Middlesbrough, United Kingdom

Introduction
400 years of Slide Rules; Their Impact on Society, from the Industrial Revolution to the Jet, Nuclear and Space Ages, and their recent re-emergence in University Education
By Professor D T Clark, Ex- H.O.D Chemistry, University of Durham.
Although slide rules were invented 400 years ago, their role in enabling calculations to be routinely carried out to enable the Industrial Revolution, the design of ships, planes, road and rail vehicles, war machines, Skyscrapers, Tunnels, Bridges as well as underpinning the Nuclear, Jet and Space ages, is largely forgotten. This lecture, demonstration, and exhibition provides an illustrated trip through History, Famous Users, Designs where slide rules were a key component. It looks at slide rules specifically designed for Chemist/Chemical Engineers, and their catastrophic demise in the 1970’s and their re-emergence in recent years to foster key skills largely lost to the current generation of Students. A general interest talk etc. not requiring anything other than an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and their impact on Society.

The event will take place in Teesside University on Thursday, 16th March 2023 from 5 pm.
