2025 Humphry Davy Lecture - “The application of science to the common purposes of life”

23 October 2025 18:00, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
Join us for this year’s Humphry Davy Lecture, “The application of science to the common purposes of life”.

We are pleased to invite members and their guests to Burlington House on Thursday 23 October at 18:00 for 18:30, for a talk on how the Royal Institution has, for over 200 years, disseminated knowledge of scientific developments to the public, through its lectures and demonstrations. The lecture will be followed by a hot buffet dinner.
Our speaker is Katherine Mathieson, Director of the Royal Institution (Ri), an independent charity that provides opportunities for people and scientists to come together to share their interest and passion for science.  Well known for the CHRISTMAS LECTURES and popular YouTube channel, the Ri also provides engaging and insightful talks and demonstrations in its iconic Theatre, runs a museum of science history – including the restored laboratory of Michael Faraday – and offers a wide range of inspiring shows and talks for school students, parents and teachers in London and across the world.
Katherine previously led the British Science Association, a charity which works to make science more relevant, representative and connected to society, and prior to that held roles at a range of other science organisations, including Nesta, the Forensic Science Service, Science Line and the pharmaceutical company Merck.
Katherine’s informative and interesting talk will draw on stories from the Ri’s early days to the latest exploits, from Humphry Davy’s spectacular performances to modern-day chemists, to show how the Ri has fulfilled its purpose across the ages.  She will share some reflections on why, even in the modern scientific age, this work remains vital.

The RI’s Royal Charter of 1800 states that the institution exists “to diffuse the knowledge … of useful mechanical inventions … and teach by courses of philosophical lectures and experiments the application of science to the common purposes of life”.
