Tooth decay is one of the most common diseases in the world. It occurs when bacteria in the mouth process sugars to produce lactic acid, which attacks the mineral component of a tooth.

In this activity students prepare a model of their teeth, investigate the pH of lactic acid solutions and examine fluoride ions in toothpaste.
