Spectroscopy in a Suitcase

Students learn about spectroscopy first-hand
Students learn about spectroscopy first-hand
The RSC's Spectroscopy in a Suitcase scheme is an outreach activity which gives school students the chance to learn about spectroscopy through hands-on experience. As well as covering the principles of spectroscopic techniques, the activities use real-life contexts to demonstrate the applications of the techniques.

Delivered by university students, the events have a strong emphasis on encouraging school pupils to consider studying chemistry and the career opportunities available. The equipment may also be available on a short-term loan basis.

Sets of equipment are hosted in universities throughout England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. The scheme continues to expand its provision as part of the HE STEM Programme.

SIAS Resource Packs

Resource packs have been produced that contain an introduction to the theory of spectroscopy and spectroscopic methods, along with spectroscopy-based exercises and suggested activities for use with SIAS equipment. The resources are available in English and Welsh versions.

SpectraSchool

As part of the Spectroscopy in a Suitcase project, we have created the SpectraSchool website to provide an online database of fully interactive IR, NMR and mass spectra for a range of organic compounds.
