The National HE STEM Programme is a three-year initiative funded by the Higher Education Funding Councils for England and Wales which aims to widen participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and enhance the skills and knowledge base of the workforce in these areas.
The programme is managed by the University of Birmingham in partnership with the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Institute of Physics, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. In addition, in each region of England and in Wales, a spoke university is responsible for coordinating and delivering programme activity at a regional level.
The RSC's contribution to the programme covers four project areas: delivering outreach, improving the school-to-university transition, developing teaching and learning at HE level, and enhancing employer engagement.
This programme also builds on some resources that were developed as part of previous projects Chemistry for our future and Chemistry: The Next Generation.
Giving students hands-on experience of cutting-edge spectroscopic techniques
Under the HE STEM Programme, School Teacher Fellows undertake a variety of projects aimed at easing the school-to-university transition
Developing problem-solving and higher-level skills through applied learning
Increasing students' exposure to employers by enhancing links between HEIs and industry
Are you involved in outreach to schools? The RSC has created a range of outreach activities that bring chemistry to life to excite and enthuse
Chemistry for Our Future
Chemistry for our Future was a three-year, HEFCE-funded project which aimed to develop a sustainable chemical science base within higher education. Outputs and good practice from this project and similar projects delivered by the other professional bodies form the basis of activity for the National HE STEM Programme.
