Dr Martin Quibell

Research Interests:  Martin is Director of Medicinal Chemistry, Amura Therapeutics Ltd. He obtained his PhD in 'Viral Protease Inhibitor Design' at the University of Birmingham in 1991. He then gained extensive experience in all aspects of solid phase synthetic methods during 5 years post-doctoral studies in the Sheppard group at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge. Martin moved on to Peptide Therapeutics as Head of Combinatorial Chemistry in 1996, progressing to Director of Medicinal Chemistry in 1999. In 2000, Martin became a founding scientist of a start-up drug discovery company Incenta Ltd, with responsibility for the establishment and co-ordination of small molecule drug discovery activities, a role that continues at Amura following their acquisition of Incenta in August 2002. Martin's research interests have followed two quite distinctive themes, which are illustrated by the following publications Recent Publications:  1. The examination and synthesis of difficult sequence peptides and small proteins, e.g. see Quibell, M., Packman, L.C., Johnson, T., J. Chem. Soc., Perkin Trans 1: 1996, 11, 1227-1234.  2. The design of small molecule inhibitors of therapeutically important cysteinyl proteinases, e.g. see Quibell, M., Benn, A., Flinn, N., Monk, T., Ramjee, M., Wang, Y. and Watts, J., Bioorg. Med. Chem. 2004, 12(21), 5689-5710.
