Dr Tom Porter FRSC
After gaining his doctorate in Organic Chemistry from the University of Salford in 1995, Tom has worked for contract research and manufacturing organisations serving the fine chemicals and pharmaceutical sectors for fourteen years, prior to joining Thomas Swan in 2010. His current position is Commercial Director – Custom Manufacturing.
Tom was elected FRSC in 2011 following his positions as Head of R&D for Contract Chemicals Ltd and Head of Technology and Operations for Piramal Healthcare Huddersfield.
Dr Sophie Purser MRSC
Sophie Purser received both her degree and doctorate from Jesus College Oxford. Following three years of post-doctoral research in synthetic organic chemistry at the University of Bristol, she joined PhosphonicS in 2011 as a technical specialist. She became Business Development Manager in 2013 where she specialises in metal removal and recovery in the chemical industry.
Dr Gareth Jenkins CChem FRSC
Dr Gareth Jenkins has a degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Imperial College London. After 20 years working throughout the contract chemistry services sector, spanning drug discovery outsourcing, process development scale and commercial manufacture of intermediates and APIs, Gareth is now CEO of Britest Limited, a leading exponent of whole process design. His interests include fine and speciality chemicals manufacture, applications of industrial biotechnology, process research and development, process control, modelling and applications of continuous manufacture.
Dr Mark Barratt CChem MRSC
Dr Mark Bratt CChem MRSC
Mark co-founded IntensiChem at the end of 2011 with the company moving into laboratories at the new Discovery Park site in Sandwich, UK very soon after. Within 12 months, the company won a UK Government technology grant to develop scalable flow ozonolysis, building on the ethos of technology enabling chemistry.
Prior to this, Mark worked in commercial manufacturing for the pharma industry for 11 years. Across two large companies, Mark's roles included process development, redesigning and optimising routes for existing processes; Six Sigma facilitation internally and externally to other sites and suppliers; plant process risk assessment management and plant support.
Mark gained his PhD in synthetic methodology, utilising carbon dioxide to synthesise organic carbonates and urethanes from alcohols.
Mr Steve Jackson MRSC
Oilfield Chemicals Specialist
Steven completed his honors degree in chemistry at Liverpool John Moores University while working for Petrolite Corporation in Liverpool. Steven has held a number of positions in that organization, now called Baker Hughes, and is currently a technical expert in the area of chemical applications for flow assurance in the oil and gas industry. Steven was coauthor of documents recently adopted as API17 TR5 and TR6 for the qualification of chemicals and best practice for delivery of chemicals via subsea infrastructure.
Dr Bruce Lane MRSC
Bruce Lane read Natural Sciences at Oxford, and completed his D. Phil. In the USA before joining ICI after a post doc at Northwestern, Evanston Ill. An industrial career with ICI led to a position, held for many years, as Technical Director of ICI Resins, later named Zeneca Resins then NeoResins, now part of DSM. Bruce retired from industry in 2000, setting up hid own consultancy company from 2000 until 2006. Bruce’s particular interests lie with all aspects of Inorganic Chemistry and Polymer chemistry.
