Biophysical Chemistry Group

What is the Biophysical Chemistry Group?

Biophysical Chemistry covers a broad spectrum of research activities, with the most common feature that the research seeks to measure, describe and explain physical phenomena in biological systems at the molecular to supra-molecular level. However, the diversity of what Biophysical Chemists do means that the community is fragmented and we see it as our prime purpose to promote and foster links between scientists working in this area and to represent and support the activities of the Biophysical Chemistry Community. To this end the Biophysical Chemistry Group (BCG) has arranged to work in partnership with the British Biophysical Society (BBS) as many of our interests and hence activities overlap. In practice this means that you will hear about activities arranged both by BCG members and the BBS. It also means that you will be able to get membership rates at BBS meetings.

By working with BBS we aim to create a single integrated community for biophysics in the UK and provide a forum and meetings to actively encourage this.

Why should you join the BCG?

There are a number of reasons to join the BCG. These include:

  • The main reason for being a member of the BCG is that we keep you informed of what is going on in the Biophysical Chemistry community. To help this process please send anything you want circulated to the Chairman, Alison Rodger
  • If you want to organize a meeting of some kind (from one day to much larger) then you can tap into these communication links. You also can apply to the BCG and BBS for support for your meeting, e.g. to sponsor a keynote speaker. There may even be some advantages in terms of shared experience, facilities available elsewhere etc. which other BCG members can offer.
  • If a BCG or BBS meeting has membership reductions at meetings then you are eligible for this. This and the meeting sponsorship is where the membership fees go.
  • We will try to optimise your interaction with the main RSC organization, other subgroups, and the chemical biology forum of which we are a member.
  • On a more altruistic note, one of our main aims is to support younger scientists so you will be contributing to student bursaries and also having occasions where younger members of the biophysical chemistry community can be found so you can interact with them.

What can you do now?

  • If you want to organize a meeting of any kind let Alison Rodger know and indicate what level of publicity you want for it.
  • Make any suggestions for what you think BCG and BBS could/should be doing. Again contact Alison Rodger in the first instance.
