Visit - Williams F1 (16th September 2009)

Although this was a morning visit to the Williams factory, it was oversubscribed. After an introduction to Williams racing cars the group had a tour of the factory where the cars just back from Monza were being prepared for the next Grand Prix in Singapore.

The tour highlighted the importance of chemistry to motor racing, ranging from the lightness of the titanium hydraulic pipes to the special heavy alloy used for the ballast weights, and how carbon fibre is moulded for use everywhere in the car’s structure. A photo and a report appeared in the November 2009's RSC News, but here is another photo showing a greener version of motorsport we saw being developed at Williams.

Henley River and Rowing Museum (17th June 2009)

John White reporting on the 2009 Retired Members Event

This was a visit to the River and Rowing Museum, starting with a one hour boat trip along the Regatta course on board Consuta II. We then disembarked at the Museum’s  jetty for lunch in the Terrace Cafe. After lunch we had an introductory talk about the Museum in which we were given the usual information about items such as the fire alarms and then were free to explore the exhibits. I was assured that it was nothing to do with us but after twenty minutes the fire alarms sounded and we were led outside while the cause was investigated. No reason was found, their valuable paintings and hoard of gold coins were safe, so we were allowed back to continue viewing.
