Centenary Lectureship 2009/2010 Winner

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA
For his creative combination of organic synthesis with biochemistry, molecular & structural biology, and spectroscopic methods to address major problems in biology and medicinal chemistry.
About the winner
John A. Katzenellenbogen obtained his Ph.D. degree in chemistry from Harvard University in 1969 and then began his academic career at the University of Illinois, where he is Swanlund Chaired Professor of Chemistry.
His research spans chemistry, biology, and medicine, with studies of steroid receptor structure and function, and use of receptor ligands in bioanalytical and biomedical applications. He prepared the first affinity labels and subtype-specific agents for estrogen receptors and receptor-based agents for imaging breast and prostate tumors by positron emission tomography.
He collaborates extensively around the world and has trained more than 100 doctoral and postdoctoral students and published more than 400 articles. Dr. Katzenellenbogen is a member of several Editorial Boards and serves on Councils of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
His honors include Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Aebersold Award from the Society of Nuclear Medicine, Cope Scholar Award from the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Greep Award from The Endocrine Society, the E. B. Hershberg Award from ACS and the Esselen Award from the ACS Northeastern Section.
