About the Winner

After enjoying maths and sciences at comprehensive school Susan was fortunate to be offered a place to study chemistry at St Johns College, Oxford. Soon after arriving in Oxford in 1998 she was offered a college Academic Scholarship. The excitement of a 4th year research project, involving soft matter and polymers at surfaces, led naturally into graduate study.

She remained in Oxford for the DPhil working in the research group of Professor Jacob Klein and as a member of Balliol College supported by the Jowett Senior Scholarship.  During the final year of her graduate degree she was elected to a Junior Research Fellowship at Merton College, Oxford (2005-2008); this provided an opportunity to develop an independent research direction without the need for a postdoctoral appointment.

In 2007 Susan was appointed as RCUK Academic Fellow at University College London. At UCL she set up her own laboratory and carried out the first experiments measuring interaction forces across ionic liquids and dense ion-containing fluids. In 2012 Susan returned to Oxford, and is now Associate Professor of Physical Chemistry and also Tutorial Fellow in Chemistry at Trinity College, Oxford.
