About the winner

Julia Hatto is a Scientific Technical Leader employed at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, Horsham. She is an experienced Synthetic Organic Chemist working at the Research - Development interface within Global Discovery Chemistry. She is also an active member of the Downland section of the RSC.

Julia has always been keen to promote chemistry and build links between Industry and local schools. This interest was sparked at the start of her career. She joined Beecham Research at Brockham Park, in 1978, after graduating from Exeter University.  Encouraged by supportive managers, Julia collaborated with enthusiastic teachers. She channeled her energies into a series of flagship initiatives building strong partnerships with both Primary and Secondary schools. Two key elements were practical hands-on experience for students and a partnership with education which thrived on feedback.

Julia's career progressed to Novartis in 1992.  Here she developed an active programme of school liaison activities based on her experience.  Again, working with both Primary and Secondary students she introduced Young Scientist Days, developed Molecules are Fun and Forward to 'A' Level. The Science Apprenticeship scheme that she initiated for school leavers builds on these foundations. The apprentices undertake training in all aspects of drug discovery whilst studying for a part-time degree. This gives them a unique opportunity to progress their career in pharmaceutical research.

Julia has been fortunate to have worked with many enlightened senior managers. Her aspirations to convey a passion and interest in science has been fully integrated into the culture of Novartis Research at Horsham.
