For his many seminal contributions in theoretical chemistry, that have advanced our understanding of chemical reaction rates, of reaction dynamics, of the structures of clusters and biomolecules, and of molecule-surface reactions.


About the Winner


Professor David Clary FRS has been President of Magdalen College Oxford since 2005 and Chief Scientific Adviser to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office since 2009.  He directs a research group in the Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory at Oxford University. 

He has degrees from Sussex University (BSc) and Cambridge University (PhD, ScD). He did research at the IBM Laboratory, San Jose, California and has held faculty posts at UMIST, Cambridge, UCL and Oxford. From 2002-5 he was Head of the Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at Oxford University and a Professorial Fellow of St John's College Oxford. 
He is an Honorary Fellow of Magdalene College Cambridge. 

David Clary was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1997 for his contributions to the quantum theory of chemical reactions. He has also been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, and the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science.
He is Editor of Chemical Physics Letters and is on the Board of Reviewing Editors of Science.
