The Perkin Prize for organic chemistry is awarded for sustained originality and achievement in research in any area of organic chemistry.

Rules and Criteria


  • Run biennially
  • Open to everyone without restrictions
  • Candidates are permitted to nominate themselves
  • A two page supporting statement addressing the selection criteria
  • Nominations open on 1 September 2010
  • Nominations close on 31 January 2011
  • Prize winners are chosen by the RSC Awards Sub-Committee
  • Prize winner receives £5000, a medal and a certificate

About Sir William Henry Perkin


Sir William Henry Perkin
Sir William Henry Perkin (1838-1907) is most famous for inventing the first aniline dye, mauveine.  He was 18 at the time of the discovery and achieved this in the garden shed of his parents' home in Cable Street, Stepney, East London.  

The Perkin Prize for Organic Chemistry was established in 2008.
