Awarded for pioneering chemical research in the study of bioinorganic materials biomineralization, biomimetic materials and hybrid nanomaterials based on integrated inorganic/organic constructs.

About the Winner

Stephen Mann is Professor of Chemistry, Director of the Centre for Organized Matter Chemistry, and Principal of the Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials at the University of Bristol, UK.

His research interests are focused on the chemical synthesis, characterization and emergence of complex forms of organized matter. He has published over 400 scientific papers, is author of Biomineralization: Principles and Concepts in Bioinorganic Materials Chemistry (2001), and has served on the editorial advisory boards of numerous journals including Advanced Materials, Angewandte Chemie and Small.

Professor Mann was co-founder (with Prof R B Frankel) of the company, Protein Magnetics (1993), and has numerous patents. He was appointed Barré Lecturer, University of Montreal, Canada (2001), Dow Distinguished Lecture in Materials Science, Northwestern University, USA (2003) and J Chatt Lecturer, UK in 2007. He was visiting professor at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel (1988), University of California, Santa Barbara, USA (1993/4) and College de France, Paris (2009).

Professor Mann has obtained awards from the Royal Society of Chemistry (Corday-Morgan Medal (1993), RSC Interdisciplinary Award (1999), J Chatt Award and Medal (2007)), the Royal Society (Wolfson Research Merit Award (2006)), and Max Planck Society (Research Prize for International Cooperation (1998).

He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society, UK, in 2003.
