Organic Molecules Day

9 July 2014, Exeter, United Kingdom

Introduction
This is an exciting opportunity for Year 12 students to carry out a range of practical techniques including mass spectrometry, IR and NMR spectroscopy in addition to hearing talks from staff and students at the University of Exeter. A wide range of organic molecules, both naturally occurring and man-made, such as therapeutic medicines and dyes tend to be aromatic molecules. During the day students will carry out the nitration of a simple aromatic compound and then look at the product using various analytical techniques.
