Professional Development speaker:
Dr Adrian Adamson: “25 years in chemistry and industry”
The route into industry from academia, and the challenges and experiences encountered in a variety of different organizations over approximately 25 years.
Scientific speaker:
Prof Mark Hodson, York University
“Earthworms and their balls of calcite”
We’re all familiar with the common earthworm but it is not well known that many earthworms secrete tiny balls of calcium carbonate into the soil. In this talk, Mark will discuss what forms of calcium carbonate these balls are made of and why the materials science industry might be interested in them. Mark will also talk about the role of these balls in the cycling of elements through the soil and how the balls can even be used to tell us about past climates.
