5th International Conference on Bio-Sensing Technology

7 - 10 May 2017, Riva Del Garda, Italy

Introduction
Bio-sensing technologies are of increasing importance in healthcare, agri-food, environmental and security sectors, and this is reflected in the continued growth of global markets for such technologies. This conference will provide a forum for accessing the most up-to-date and authoritative knowledge from both commercial and academic worlds, sharing best practice in the field as well as learning about case studies of successfully integrated bio-sensing technologies. The meeting will provide an opportunity to highlight recent developments and to identify emerging and future areas of growth in this exciting field.

Following the success of the first 4 conferences, the 5th International Conference on Bio-Sensing Technology will continue to bring together leaders from industry and academia to exchange and share their experiences, present research results, explore collaborations and to spark new ideas, with the aim of developing new projects and exploiting new technology for bio-sensing applications.

The conference will include:

Presentations from leading specialists highlighting new opportunities in bio-sensing technologies
An opportunity to share best practice in the integration of technologies for bio-sensing
An exhibition of leading-edge, commercial technology
A poster forum for unveiling new research ideas and concepts
Networking opportunities
A strong industry focus with companies presenting their technologies

Themes

The major features required to develop a commercially successful bio-sensing technology are represented in the five themes of the conference. The scope and area of the invited talks in each theme is given below:

1. Novel biomarkers
This theme will cover the discovery of new biological molecules for bio-sensing applications, for example new disease markers that can be used as a target for applications such as rapid diagnostics. Also included will be the application of biosensing technologies for the measurement of biomarkers in novel application areas or the measurement of biomarkers in novel samples matrices. The focus of the theme being the biomarker.

2. Biosensor interface
This theme focuses on the surface of the sensor, in particular understanding the immobilisation and stabilisation of biological molecules; this could include novel bio-reactive surfaces such as nano-patterned surfaces, nano materials, whole cells, novel proteins and nucleic acids. For example, novel molecules integrated with silicon components at the micron and nano-scales.

3. Novel detection technologies
The emphasis in this theme will be on new and emerging technologies used to develop novel biosensors and biosensing applications. This could involve a wide range of transduction technologies including optical, electrochemical, piezoelectric or magnetic measurements; novel sensors for bio-imaging. Micro and nano fabrication technologies used to develop and manufacture bio-sensors.

4. Integrated systems
This theme will explore challenges associated with integrating technologies to give a fully functional systems. For example, this could be a biosensing system that integrates microfluidics with a novel measurement technology or how signals processing is used to generate useful information. Also included would be potential solutions relating to the development of new instrumentation signal and image processing, data analysis and communications. Including technical interfacing challenges such as sample introduction and handling.

5. Commercialisation and impact
This theme will focus on showcasing new integrated bio-sensing systems which are close to being, or have been commercialised. Also covered within this theme will be evaluations and trials of novel biosensing systems in terms of the impact the technology has on society and markets.
